Strumpshaw Steam Rally

It’s that time of year again for the Strumpshaw Steam Rally. Held near Norwich, Norfolk (England). These photos were taken by me back in 2009. I remember that because my dad was still alive and I had to get about with my walking stick – I didn’t have the mobility scooter in those days. (We were still thinking that my mobility was going to SOON get better).

As a toddler in the mid 70s Mum and Dad would bring me along to these various steam rallies. Petrol (gas) was cheap back then. There’d be colourful, whirring fairground rides and cheap hotdogs, and that fairground organ music and hundreds of men fawning over hundreds of steam engines. I never wanted to leave the carousal horses and the stench of steam fumes is forever secreted in my memories. I love steam trains. My wish is to travel on a proper big one. So far, I only remember the beautiful bijou one at Wroxham (Norfolk, England).

Videos below of when John and I visited the Wroxham steam train in 2016.

As for Strumpshaw, although I would like to go I don’t think my mobility scooter can handle all that expanse of bumpy grass. Still, I have those distant memories.

About Oscar Dandelion

Hi, I'm Faith McCord, writer of the Oscar Dandelion books. I love reading, writing, watching films, looking at architecture and general design, embroidery (especially Elizabethan), spending time with my family. I used to enjoy long walks, bodybuilding, going out, however, since my injury my mobility is seriously impaired, so I'm more of a home-body now. I'm interested in meeting other indie / pro writers, so do say 'Hello' ! :)

My wife and I drove from Exmoor to London in 2002 and stopped at the Blue Bell Railway to ask for directions. Several older people were seated around a table discussing how to get an old steam engine running
