Decoupaged Matchboxes (crafts)

When the lockdown began I decoupaged matchboxes as a way to relax. I was using pictures ripped from magazines and gardening brochures and soon started buying the ‘proper stuff’ – assorted patterned papers etc. – encouraging my family to have a go. My Mum has finished a couple of projects herself: a cardboard box and a few clipboards.

It was fun adding bits like colourful satin ribbons, stickers, 3d objects and colourful glitter. I outlined some parts with a black artist pen and added metallic touches with thick gold and copper pens. I already had some of the crafting materials including the mod podge which not only acts as a glue and protective coating but is also good stuff for creating, through repeated applications, a 3d stippled texture – look at the fairy’s wing.

All of these matchboxes are decoupaged by me. I gave my Mum the Snowmen one as a New Year’s gift and she also received the Orange Butterfly one as a Mother’s Day present. I kept the Blue Tit Bird for myself and will list the Fairy one in my online shop when I’ve some more to offer for sale.

It’s amazing to think that some decoupaged items are around a hundred years old today.

With decoupage you really can’t go wrong! Why not have a go yourself? It’s very relaxing and the end product is quite satisfying. I would recommend starting small, perhaps a simple box and use anything you already have round the house or garden. Flowers and leaves can be dried and pressed quite flat between the pages of a heavy book – just use/insert the foliage between a few protective plain sheets of paper if you intend to keep the book as a book. You don’t even need ‘fancy’ glue, any pva glue will do (or so I read!). Don’t question too much how you want to decorate – and what is most important – have fun.

You can use your favourite colours and themes. A satin ribbon adds a pretty or elegant touch. I think decoupaged matchboxes make wonderful and personal gifts for females and males.
